Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce giant, was named ‘Retailer of the Year’at the World Retail Awards gala dinner in Rome last night.

Alibaba, which delivered the world’s largest ever IPO in 2014, was voted the winner by a Grand Jury*. Featuring some of the leading global retailers, the Jury noted that the group has changed the face of consumer behaviour in China, whilst also making its presence felt on the global stage. The judges commented that through constant innovation across all its operations, from supply chain to payment systems and financial services, Alibaba has pursued growth and created new ways to serve customers.

Two of the biggest names in UK retailing – Primark and Marks & Spencer - also won awards.

Primark’s CEO Paul Marchant;was presented with the;outstanding leadership award, and the business also scooped the retail transformation and reinvention award.Primark was singled out for the consistent success of the business, including its international expansion, and delivering spectacular financial metrics, whilst overcoming any challenges in each market they have entered.

Marks & Spencer’s ‘For every milestone’ advertising campaign was voted the best campaign of the year. The campaign was commended for its well targeted approach and the appeal of the humorous, heart touching stories which combined with product benefit very clearly.

Nitim Passi, who founded Missguided.com with a tiny amount of capital, won Young Entrepreneur of the Year. The judges were particularly impressed with his visionary approach and ability to create an international company, without any refinancing, which is thriving in hugely competitive markets.

JD.com, which was voted e-commerce retailer of the year, was acknowledged to be a retailer in the truest tradition. Despite operating in a hugely competitive market against a major rival, JD.com demonstrates fantastic agility meeting customers’ needs and delivering authentic products.
The iconic London toy store Hamleys was awarded Store design of the year for its new shop, Hamleys World in Moscow. With a completely immersive and experiential environment the Moscow store has moved beyond simple sales and has become a ‘destination’ shopping experience for the whole family.

Ian McGarrigle, Chairman of the World Retail Congress, said: “This has been another outstanding year with exceptional standards set by the finalists in all the categories. We are delighted at the number of entrances in each category, and the ultimate winners are all fantastic examples of the diversity, and constantly evolving nature, of retailing.”
