The Guardian: Why is it so hard to climb the career ladder at a charity?

A lack of diversity in the Charity and Not-for-Profit Sector could be the result of limited career progression within charity organisations at senior levels, according to an article published in The Guardian and citing Green Park’s research. Other reasons include not challenging the status quo, flat hierarchies and risk aversion.

Similarly, the lack of career progression means that the sector is less likely to benefit from the fresh ideas, skills and the diversity of thought that comes hand in hand with new leadership talent. It also runs the risk of creating a shortage in pipeline talent as senior managers look to other sectors in order to break through the glass ceiling.
